Tinubu Commissions 198km Bwari Water Network, Says Clean Water Is a Fundamental Right
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the 198-kilometre Bwari Township Water Supply Network, describing the project as a major milestone in expanding access to clean water for residents of Abuja’s satellite towns under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Bwari Area Council on Tuesday, the President said the project connects Bwari and surrounding communities to treated water from the Lower Usuma Dam, bringing an end to years of dependence on boreholes and untreated streams.
Declaring that “Water is life. Clean water is dignity. It is a fundamental right, not a luxury,” President Tinubu said the project reflects his administration’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that directly improves the lives of Nigerians.
According to the President, the project was initiated after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, drew attention to the water challenges facing residents of Bwari.
“I told him, ‘Go out there, mobilize the best, and fix it.’ Today, we are commissioning this state-of-the-art water network. We don’t make excuses—we deliver results,” the President said.
Tinubu noted that the Bwari water project follows the recent completion of similar infrastructure in Karu, stressing that the Renewed Hope Agenda is focused on providing practical solutions to the everyday needs of Nigerians.
He revealed that the project has already generated more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs, while also reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases and eliminating the financial burden many families face in drilling private boreholes.
The President assured residents that similar water projects would be extended to Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji before the end of the administration, urging communities to protect the new infrastructure.
“This project belongs to you. It was built with your commonwealth for your progress. Guard it jealously,” he said.
He added that as his administration marks its third anniversary, investments in infrastructure across the FCT are laying the foundation for a more resilient, inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who attended the event, offered prayers for peace, healing and national prosperity, drawing inspiration from the Christian scriptures.
Wike: Governance Must Improve People’s Lives
FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike said the commissioning fulfilled President Tinubu’s directive to extend potable water beyond Abuja city centre to satellite communities.
He recalled that after expanding water supply to Karu, the administration moved to Bwari, demonstrating that infrastructure development in the FCT goes beyond road construction.
“We’re not only concentrating on roads. We’re making sure every critical sector receives attention, and that’s why we’re here today,” Wike said.
The Minister disclosed that the Bwari Water Supply Network represents the 50th project officially commissioned since he assumed office, expressing confidence that 10 additional projects would be completed before political campaigns begin ahead of the 2027 elections.
He maintained that the true essence of governance is improving people’s quality of life.
“When people are happy, those in government will also be happy. Governance is about making positive changes in people’s lives,” he said.
Wike also announced that the 17-kilometre Bwari-Kubwa Road is expected to be commissioned before the end of the year.
Clean Water Will Improve Public Health – Mariya Mahmoud
FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as the fulfilment of a promise made to residents of Bwari, saying improved access to potable water would strengthen public health, support livelihoods and boost confidence in government.
She commended President Tinubu for prioritising infrastructure development across the FCT and praised Barrister Wike for accelerating project delivery, particularly in underserved satellite communities.
Project to Serve Several Communities
Providing a technical overview, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, said the contract for the project was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited in August 2025.
He explained that the water network is designed to complement the Greater Abuja Water Project and provide potable water to Bwari and neighbouring communities including Ushafa, Aji, Zuma, Gaba and Kuchikau.
The project forms part of the FCT Administration’s broader strategy to expand essential infrastructure across satellite towns, where a significant proportion of the territory’s population lives and works.
