Opposition
Status Comes from Electoral Wins, Not Coalitions
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that true opposition credibility in Nigeria must be earned through electoral victories rather than “emergency coalitions” or political rhetoric.
Speaking during a visit to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national headquarters in Abuja, Wike dismissed claims by smaller political groups positioning themselves as leading opposition forces, noting that success at the polls remains the only measure of relevance.
“You cannot become an opposition party without winning elections,” he said.
Wike reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP’s newly elected National Working Committee (NWC), pledging support as the party works to rebuild after internal crises. He urged the leadership to prioritise reconciliation, especially by engaging members who have defected but may still be interested in returning.
He also called on the party to remain focused despite ongoing legal challenges, expressing confidence in its chances.
Responding, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed assured that the new leadership would reposition the party and strengthen its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The visit highlights renewed efforts by the PDP to consolidate its position as a leading opposition party amid shifting political alliances.
