Nigerian Passport Drops to 90th in Global Ranking, Still Offers Visa-Free or Easy Access to 44 Countries

Nigerian Passport Drops to 90th in Global Ranking, Still Offers Visa-Free or Easy Access to 44 Countries

Nigeria’s passport has slipped to 90th position in the latest Henley Passport Index, highlighting the continued challenges Nigerian travelers face in global mobility despite retaining access to 44 destinations without the need to obtain a traditional visa before departure.

The July 2026 edition of the globally recognized passport ranking, released by international residence and citizenship advisory firm Henley & Partners, assessed 199 passports based on the number of countries and territories their holders can enter either visa-free, through a visa-on-arrival, or via an electronic travel authorization (e-visa).

Although Nigeria maintained the same travel access score of 44 destinations as recorded in the April 2026 ranking, the country’s passport nevertheless slipped by one position—from 89th to 90th—as other countries improved their global mobility scores.

Nigeria now shares the 90th position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Turkmenistan, whose citizens also enjoy access to 44 destinations under similar travel arrangements.

What the Ranking Means

The Henley Passport Index is regarded as one of the world’s most authoritative passport rankings. It measures the strength of passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a standard visa before travel.

The index relies on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) alongside independent research by Henley & Partners to determine the level of travel freedom enjoyed by citizens around the world.

For Nigerian travelers, the latest ranking means that while the passport remains among the lower-ranked globally, it still provides opportunities for relatively seamless travel across several regions, particularly within Africa.

44 Destinations Nigerians Can Visit Without a Traditional Visa

Nigerian passport holders can travel to the following destinations through visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, or electronic visa (e-visa) arrangements:

Africa

  • Benin
  • Burkina Faso
  • Burundi (Visa on arrival)
  • Cameroon
  • Cape Verde Islands
  • Chad
  • Comoro Islands (Visa on arrival)
  • Côte d’Ivoire
  • Djibouti
  • Ghana
  • Guinea
  • Guinea-Bissau
  • Kenya
  • Liberia
  • Madagascar (Visa on arrival)
  • Mali
  • Mauritius
  • Mozambique
  • Niger
  • Rwanda
  • Senegal
  • Seychelles
  • Sierra Leone
  • The Gambia
  • Togo

Caribbean

  • Barbados
  • Dominica
  • Haiti
  • Montserrat
  • St. Kitts and Nevis

Asia

  • Cambodia (Visa on arrival)
  • Iran (Visa on arrival)
  • Lebanon
  • Maldives (Visa on arrival)
  • Timor-Leste (Visa on arrival)

Pacific and Oceania

  • Cook Islands
  • Fiji
  • Kiribati
  • Micronesia
  • Niue (Visa on arrival)
  • Palau Islands (Visa on arrival)
  • Samoa (Visa on arrival)
  • Tuvalu
  • Vanuatu

Regional Mobility Remains Nigeria’s Strength

Most of the destinations accessible to Nigerian passport holders are within West Africa, where the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocol allows citizens of member states to move freely across borders for short stays without visas.

This regional integration continues to provide significant travel opportunities for Nigerians for business, tourism, education, and family visits across neighboring countries.

Beyond Africa, several island nations in the Caribbean and Pacific, as well as a handful of Asian countries, also offer simplified entry procedures for Nigerian travelers, either through visa-on-arrival or electronic visa systems.

Global Competition Continues to Shape Rankings

The latest decline in Nigeria’s position illustrates the increasingly competitive nature of global passport rankings. Even when a country’s visa-free access remains unchanged, its position can fall if other nations negotiate additional visa waivers or expand travel agreements with more countries.

Analysts say passport rankings increasingly reflect diplomatic relations, international cooperation, border security standards, and bilateral travel agreements between countries.

For many Nigerian travelers, obtaining visas for major destinations in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia remains a significant hurdle, making regional travel and countries offering simplified entry procedures increasingly attractive.

While the Nigerian passport’s latest ranking underscores the country’s limited global travel mobility, access to 44 destinations without a conventional pre-travel visa continues to provide opportunities for tourism, business, and cultural exchange across several parts of the world.
