Inuwa Pushes for Gombe-Biu Super Highway, Northern and Southern Bypasses
Umahi: Gombe-Biu axis is Tinubu administration’s priority project
GOMBE, August 10, 2026 — Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has intensified efforts to secure the early commencement and speedy completion of major federal road projects in the state, describing the infrastructure corridors as critical to unlocking the economic potential of Gombe and the wider North-East.
The governor made the push on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, where discussions focused on strategic federal road interventions, particularly the Gombe-Biu axis of the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Super Highway.
The super highway, recently approved and flagged off by the Federal Government, is expected to strengthen connectivity across the region and improve access to markets, agricultural centres, commercial hubs and other economic destinations.
Governor Yahaya has repeatedly advocated the early commencement of the Gombe-Biu section, following the groundbreaking ceremony performed during Minister Umahi’s recent visit to Gombe alongside the governor and members of the National Assembly.
With the groundbreaking completed, the governor is now seeking sustained federal action towards full-scale construction and timely delivery of the project.
Governor seeks bypasses for Gombe metropolis
A major component of the governor’s proposal is the consideration of northern and southern bypasses for Gombe metropolis.
According to the governor, the proposed bypasses would open up the state capital from both ends, provide strategic links to the Gombe-Biu corridor, reduce congestion on existing roads and improve the movement of people and goods.
Responding, Umahi described the Gombe-Biu axis as a priority project of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and assured the governor that his request to commence construction from the proposed point of interest would receive due consideration.
The minister also expressed confidence in Hitech Construction Company, the contractor handling the project, describing the firm as one of the most competent contractors for major infrastructure projects.
Umahi praises Inuwa’s development drive
Beyond the road project, Umahi commended Governor Yahaya for his persistence, commitment and determination to attract development to Gombe State.
Reflecting on his recent visit to the state, the minister said he had gained a deeper appreciation of the scale of infrastructure development taking place under the Yahaya administration.
“Since my visit to Gombe, I have become like your ambassador. Anywhere I go, I talk about your state and the developmental strides I have witnessed,” Umahi said.
He added that people seeking to witness what he described as genuine development and visionary leadership should visit Gombe.
The minister assured the governor that the Federal Government would deliver the Gombe-Biu project, expressing confidence that its completion would have a significant impact on residents and further demonstrate the infrastructure agenda of the Tinubu administration.
Other North-East corridors on agenda
Umahi also acknowledged Governor Yahaya’s continued advocacy for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of other strategic highways connecting Gombe to neighbouring states.
These include the Gombe-Bajoga-Potiskum, Gombe-Dukku-Darazo and Gombe-Bauchi corridors.
The state government considers the roads vital economic lifelines, particularly for connecting farmers to markets, communities to commercial centres and Gombe to major economic hubs across the North-East.
The renewed push by Governor Yahaya therefore places road infrastructure at the centre of Gombe’s broader strategy to expand economic activity, improve regional integration and strengthen the state’s position within the Federal Government’s infrastructure development agenda.
