Nigeria Hosts African Peer Learning Forum on Climate Adaptation and Peacebuilding
Government representatives from seven African countries have gathered in Abuja, Nigeria, for a three-day technical dialogue aimed at strengthening the link between climate change adaptation, conflict sensitivity, and peacebuilding in conflict-affected nations.
The peer learning forum, scheduled for May 5–7, 2026, is co-hosted by Nigeria, Canada, and the NAP Global Network, with support from the Government of Ireland.
Participants from
Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Liberia, Somalia, and South Sudan are engaging in discussions on how to build climate resilience while addressing conflict and promoting peace in vulnerable communities.
The event focuses on helping countries align their climate adaptation priorities with peacebuilding frameworks through their National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes.
Speaking at the forum, Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director of DCC, said Nigeria recognizes the urgent need for conflict-sensitive adaptation planning that supports national peacebuilding and development goals.
“As we grapple with the impacts of climate change, linking adaptation and peacebuilding efforts remains high on Nigeria’s climate agenda. This event offers a valuable platform for peer learning and policy dialogue,” she said.
Also speaking, Anne Hammill, Associate Vice-President for Resilience at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), noted that many conflict-affected states are among the most climate-vulnerable globally.
“The NAP process can help break the cycle of climate vulnerability and conflict by integrating peacebuilding into adaptation efforts,” she said.
The *NAP Global Network, hosted by IISD, supports countries worldwide in advancing national adaptation planning and has facilitated peer learning for over 1,000 adaptation planners across 84 countries
